Maybe

Maybe I missed you.  Maybe I left on a boat bound for my own self-improvement and left you as a shadow in my wake.  Maybe I left you abandoned on the dock without saying goodbye, thinking you'd be there when I returned.

Maybe you didn't leave me, but I left you.  Perhaps the miles between us are to be blamed on me.  I might be the reason the long, dark nights are so lonely this side of the horizon.

But maybe you're still waiting.
